Coffee Chat

First off, let me just say that I am so sorry to not have visited your lovely blogs out there. We haven't had any internet at home for the last two days, just got it back, (yay!!!) and now I am trying to catch up with everything. At the same time, I have had some time to reflect on a couple of things and I am amazed at how much time I spend on the internet. To be honest, it is really scary to see how much time we devote to the computer and internet and how dependent we are on it. But, enough of me babbling on.

In the summer, I was getting overwhelmed with the amount of things that we had in our home and figured we could start selling some of it, since things were getting pretty crowded around here. So, we didn't have a coffee table for a while and with a small baby around, we figured it would be best not to have one at all. Time has flown by and our little munchkin is not crawling anymore, but walking and running around. Time for a coffee table to make its return to our living room again. Here it is.

The coffee table was built by my husband's grandfather sometime around 1960. I have always loved the lines and especially the height of the coffee table. My little guy loves it as well, as it is the perfect height for him to play at.

So, now that we moved it from the bedroom to the living room, we figured we should give it some TLC.

Here is a close up of the wood.

I am not sure what that TLC involves, so I would love your opinion. Question: should I paint it or should I just leave it as is? I am thinking of doing a combination of white and dark wood stain. What do you think? I would love to hear your thoughts. Have you repainted any furniture lately? Have a great day everyone.

  1. I'm a fan of white, although you could always do the stained top/white legs or vice-versa.

  2. I painted a teak coffee table from the 70's with an opaque stain. I love how it turned out. I used a BM oil stain, it really turned out fabulous!

  3. Hi Barbara, thank you so much for that tip. I will have a look when I go to Home Depot.

  4. Lovely looking table - I have a similar one though it's only a side table, and was pretty beaten up when I got my hands on it - a bit of a sand and some teak oil (it isn't even teak) and it looks beautiful, it's protected and true to it's original design. I am, however, a big furniture painter (and everything painter) - one tip, I just painted our front door white and my little munchkin put huge scratches in it straight away! Keep little hands away, they're fast and naughty!

  5. I recently oiled an antique desk because I loved the look of the bare wood so much.. I love the lines of this table. It's very mid-century mod, so a two tone look would be fabulous, too!
